What to expect

Putrajaya; An eye-catching array of monumental architecture amid manicured greenery is on display in Putrajaya, 25km south of KL and 20km north of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Covering 49 sq km of former rubber and oil-palm plantations, the federal government’s administrative hub (almost exclusively Muslim in population) was but a twinkle in the eye of its principal visionary – former prime minister Dr Mahathir – as late as the early 1990s. It’s still a long way off its envisioned population of more than 300,000 and can feel eerily quiet at weekends.

Photo stop at

1. Perdana Putra (Prime Minister Residence & Minister Office)
This imposing building stands atop the main hill in Putrajaya, catching eyes with its palatial-style green dome and stone walls. Featuring a blend of Islamic and modern architecture, the building which houses the office complex of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Located on the main hill in Putrajaya, it has become synonymous with the executive branch of the Malaysian federal government. It is not open to visitors, but you can still admire its grandeur from the outside.

2. Putra Mosque
Rose-tinted granite gives the Putra Mosque its iconic pink hue, an elegance that reflects as remarkably on the inside as it does on the outside. Built by the lake in 1997, the mosque can accommodate up to 15,000 worshippers. Visitors would stop by for photographs with this sophisticated landmark, which drew inspiration from Malay and Middle Eastern influences.

Or
Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque (Masjid Besi)
While the Pink Mosque may have stolen its thunder, the Iron Mosque (or Tunku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque) is another architectural wonder worth checking out. Constructed primarily from steel, “wire mesh” architecture draws inspiration from Chinese and German designs. Unlike other mosques in Malaysia, there is no minaret which is used to call for prayers. From afar, it looks like it is made of metal or glass.

3. Palace of Justice
The first impression anyone has when looking at the Palace of Justice would surely be on its Islamic architecture and design, particularly its Moorish elements which are often seen in other Malaysian iconic buildings like the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. It was designed to hold a large atrium and many court rooms within its realms which was designed by aQidea Architect which was responsible for the Putra Perdana complex as well. Located within the Palace of Justice are 2 Appeal Courts and 6 Federal Courts the principal architect involved in this project was Ahmad Rozi A Wahab who laid out the main motif of the building that was very much inspired by India’s Taj Mahal and Palladian culture.

4. Putrajaya International Convention Centre
Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) is one of Malaysia’s premier meeting and convention venues. Nested in an oasis of green parks, lakes and wetlands, it’s a carefully planned, high-tech centre for meetings of any types and shapes. The first convention centre to be awarded the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practices Award by ASEAN in 2007, it has reaped many accolades ever since. Rising majestically from the top of Putrajaya’s highest point, PICC is both an iconic landmark overlooking Malaysia’s government headquarters and one that incorporates a modern, spacious and versatile design, architecturally and culturally meaningful.

5. Millennium Monument
Designed in 2005 to usher in the new millennium, this is the first monument to be built in Putrajaya. The walkway twirling around the monument illustrates the history of Malaysia, the panels describing significant events in the country. There is a time capsule at the base of the monument which will be opened in 2020. As you move up along the ramps of the Millennium Monument, you can see sweeping views of the waterfront.

6. Cruise Tasik Putrajaya
The vast man-made Putrajaya Lake is the city’s centre-piece that spreads over 400 hectares, a blue watery expanse which blends across the different precincts. For the best views of Putrajaya, take a cruise around the lake. Through this meandering lake visitors can take a leisurely lake cruise to see the many sights and landmarks from e unique perspective – with wind in your hair and the light spray of water turns the cruise into an experience no one should miss.
